yesterday

today's super groovy delicious bite comes with scramby eggs.

the most covered song of all time (the guinness book of world records says more than 3,000 recorded versions) took the top of u.s. charts this week in 1965. it wasn't released as a single in britain until 1976 (when it made it to number eight). it is considered one of the greatest pop songs of all time and for years was the most played song on the radio. it's probably being played right now.

paul mccartney says he woke up from a dream with the melody in his head. for months he was worried that he had someone else's song and played it to whoever would listen to see if they recognized it. the band knocked it around with the working title 'scrambled eggs' (scrambled eggs...oh, my baby how i love your legs").

mccartney came up with the lyrics during a five hour car trip from lisbon to albufeira when he was on vacation with jane asher. the villa where paul and jane stayed was owned by shadows' guitarist bruce welch. bruce said that when he was packing to leave, paul asked him if he had a guitar because he was working on the lyrics since the airport. "he borrowed my guitar and started playing the song we all now know as 'yesterday'."

in the studio, producer george martin suggested paul perform the song alone with his texan steel string acoustic guitar; he later added a string quartet to the mix. it was the first time that all of the beatles didn't play on one of their songs. the rest of the band did not like it very much and refused to let it be released as a single in britain.

in the US the song was the centerpiece of an album of songs ('yesterday...and today') that were kept off of the US versions of their previous two albums, as well as non-album singles.

much of the airplay it has gotten is from muzak versions. mccartney had to ask michael jackson for permission to use the song for his movie give my regards to broadstreet. recently sir paul tried to change the songwriting credit from "lennon/mccartney" to "mccartney/lennon", but yoko ono refused.

yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away
now it looks as though they're here to stay
oh, i believe in yesterday
suddenly i'm not half the man i used to be
there's a shadow hanging over me
oh, yesterday came suddenly

why she had to go
i don't know, she wouldn't say
i said something wrong
now i long for yesterday

yesterday love was such an easy game to play
now i need a place to hide away
oh, i believe in yesterday

why she had to go
i don't know, she wouldn't say
i said something wrong
now i long for yesterday

yesterday love was such an easy game to play
now i need a place to hide away
oh, i believe in yesterday
