remain in light

thirty years ago talking heads reinvented themselves with remain in light. an experimental blending of styles and textures, it built on the blueprint of the song 'i zimbra' from their previous album fear of music to create a polyrhythmic, spontaneous feel that was more collaborative. transcendent and earthy, tribal and industrial, cerebral and groovy, it is one of my very favorite albums of all time.

brian eno agreed to produce the album after he heard the new direction they were going and used sampling and loops to alter the instrumental jams that the band was creating. adrian belew was brought in to add synthesized guitar solos to the tracks. david byrne was challenged to change his style of singing with these radical new grooves. when he had trouble coming up with lyrics, he scatted and made rhyming noises which he listened to until he heard words in the gibberish. nona hendryx was brought in to do vocals as well. the lyrics draw from african themes juxtaposed with a modern urban sensibility. he also borrowed from the stylistic ranting of preachers.

once in a lifetime was a top thirty hit in Australia, Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, and the UK.  In the US, it didn't even crack the top 100.

and you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
and you may find yourself in another part of the world
and you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
and you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
and you may ask yourself-well...how did i get here ?

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by - water flowing underground
Into the blue again - after the money´s gone
once in a lifetime - water flowing underground.

and you may ask yourself
how do I work this ?
and you may ask yourself
where is that large automobile ?
and you may tell yourself
this is not my beautiful house !
and you may tell yourself
this is not my beautiful wife !

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
letting the days go by - water flowing underground
into the blue again - after the money´s gone
once in a lifetime - water flowing underground.

same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

water dissolving...and water removing
there is water at the bottom of the ocean
carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
remove the water at the bottom of the ocean !

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
letting the days go by - water flowing underground
into the blue again - in the silent water
under the rocks and stones - there is water underground.

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
letting the days go by - water flowing underground
into the blue again - after the money´s gone
once in a lifetime - water flowing underground.

and you may ask yourself
what is that beautiful house ?
and you may ask yourself
where does that highway go ?
and you may ask yourself
am i right ?...am i wrong ?
and you may tell yourself
my god!...what have i done?

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
letting the days go by - water flowing underground
into the blue again - in the silent water
under the rocks and stones - there is water underground.

letting the days go by - let the water hold me down
letting the days go by - water flowing underground
into the blue again - after the money´s gone
once in a lifetime - water flowing underground.

same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
same as it ever was...same as it ever was...same as it ever was...
same as it ever was...same as it ever was...

and then the twister comes... here comes the twister
letting the days go by...

the dense music that was created required more musicians to perform in a live setting; so they expanded their lineup to include belew, bernie worrell, busta jones, steve scales, and donnette macdonald.

crosseyed and painless:

lost my shape,
trying to act casual.
can't stop,
i might end up in the hospital.
changing my shape,
i feel like an accident.
they're back,
to explain their experience

isn't it weird?
looks too obscure to me
wasting away
that was their policy

i'm ready to leave
i push the fact in front of me
facts lost
facts are never what they seem to be
nothing there,
no information left of any kind
lifting my head
looking for danger signs

there was a line
there was a formula
sharp as a knife
facts cut a hole in us

still waiting (repeat)

the feeling returns
whenever we close our eyes
lifting my head
looking around inside

the island of doubt
it's like the taste of medicine
working by hindsight
got the message from the oxygen
making a list
find the cost of opportunity
doing it right
facts are useless in emergencies

the feeling returns
whenever we close our eyes
lifting my head
looking around inside

facts are simple and facts are straight
facts are lazy and facts are late
facts all come with points of view
facts don't do what i want them to
facts just twist the truth around
facts are living turned inside out
facts are getting the best of them
facts are nothing on the face of things
facts don't stain the furniture
facts go out and slam the door
facts are written all over your face
facts continue to change their shape

i'm still waiting...

the great curve:

sometimes the world has a load of questions
seems like the world knows nothing at all
the world is here but it's out of reach
some people touch it...but they can't hold on.

she is moving to describe the world
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she has messages for everyone
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she is moving by remote control
night must fall now-darker, darker.
hands that move her are invisible
night must fall now-darker, darker.

the world has a way of looking at people
sometimes it seems that the world is wrong
she loves the world, and all the people in it
she shakes 'em up when she starts to walk.

she is only partly human being
divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so
she defines the possibilities
divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so
holding on for an Eternity
divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so
gone...ending without finishing.
divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so

the world moves on a womans hips
the world moves and it swivels and bops
the world moves on a womans hips
the world moves and it bounces and hops

a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up
a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up
she's gonna hold/it move/it hold it/move it hold/it move it hold/it move it
a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up

she is moving to describe the world
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she has messages for everyone
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she is moving by remote control
night must fall now-darker, darker.
hands that move her are invisible
night must fall now-darker, darker.

divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she...has got to move the world...to move the world...to move the world

a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up
a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up
she's gonna hold it/move it hold it move/it hold it move it/hold it/move it
a world of light...she's gonna open our eyes up

wanna define...so say so, so say so
divine, to define, she is moving to define, so say so, so say so
night must fall now-darker, darker.
she...has got to move the world...to move the world...to move the world

seen and not seen:

he would see faces in movies, on t.v., in magazines, and in books...he thought that some of these faces might be right for him...and through the years, by keeping an ideal facial structure fixed in his mind...or somewhere in the back of his mind...that he might, by force of will, cause his face to approach those of his ideal...the change would be very subtle...it might take ten years or so...gradually his face would change its' shape...a more hooked nose...wider, thinner lips...beady eyes...a larger forehead.

he imagined that this was an ability he shared with most other people...they had also molded their faces according to some ideal...maybe they imagined that their new face would better suit their personality...or maybe they imagined that their personality would be forced to chang' to fit the new appearance...this is why first impressions are often correct...although some people might have made mistakes...they may have arrived at an appearance that bears no relationship to them...they may have picked an ideal appearance based on some childish whim or momentary impulse...some may have gotten half-way there, and then changed their minds.

he wonders if he too might have made a similar mistake.

listening wind:

mojique sees his village from a nearby hill
mojique thinks of the days before Americans came
he sees the foreigners in growing numbers
he sees the foreigners in fancy houses
he thinks of the days that he can still remember...now.

mojique holds a package in his quivering hands
mojique sends the package to the American man
softly, he glides along the streets and alleys
up comes the wind that makes them run for cover
he feels the time is surely now or never...more.

the wind in my heart
the wind in my heart
the dust in my head
the dust in my head
the
wind in my heart
the
wind in my heart
(come to) drive them away
drive them away.

mojique buys equipment in the marketplace
mojique plants devices in the free trade zone
he feels the
wind is lifting up his people
he calls the
wind to guide him on his mission
he know his friend the
wind is always standing...by.

mojique smells the
wind that comes from far away
mojique waits for news in a quiet place
he feels the presence of the
wind around him
he feels the power of the past behind him
he has the knowledge of the
wind to guide him...on.

the
wind in my heart
the wind in my heart
the dust in my head
the dust in my head
the
wind in my heart
the
wind in my heart
(come to) drive them away
drive them away.
