released on october 2, 2000, kid a debuted at number one on the u.s. album chart and went platinum in its first week in the u.k. the much anticipated followup to their commercial breakthrough, ok computer was a complete departure not only from the sound of that album, but also from traditional melody. it experimented with electronica and sampling, while members of the band worked with different instruments. they changed everything about how they work due to the extreme depression and alienation lead singer thom yorke had developed toward the media and his success. eventually, they recorded enough music for two albums.
