save the best for last

Vanessa Williams found redemption and her greatest success with this song that was added to her album at the last minute. When the demo came to her as a possible replacement for another song during the end of sessions for 'The Comfort Zone', she said: "I can't believe nobody wants this song. I have to have this song." 'Save The Best For Last' was written by Phil Galdston, Wendy Waldman and Jon Lind. Lind recalls: "Phil and I were in Los Angeles, and we wrote the melody and music. Phil decided to ask Wendy to help write the lyric with him. I loved their lyric. We demoed the song, keeping the production simple, with just electric piano, bass, synth strings, shaker and vocal by Wendy. Wendy’s vocal was stunning. Ed Eckstine (then President of Mercury Records) heard the song and played it for Vanessa Williams, who loved it. Keith Thomas produced it, and we were thrilled with how gorgeous this record was. It was number one for five weeks." Williams felt the song told her story of taking back her career after the scandal of having her Miss America crown taken away when nude photos surfaced. With Williams' voice the lyrics speaking of a lost love regained held a deeper meaning that resonated with the public. In the US it went to number one on not only the pop chart; but also the adult contemporary and R&B charts. It also went to number three in Japan and the UK, number two in Ireland, and number one in Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and Record of the Year and won the ASCAP award for Song of the Year.

Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
'Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how
I planned
But somehow it's enough
And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you
'Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
And now we're standing face to face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last

Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes 'round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
You went and saved the best for last
