hey! baby

Bruce Channel became a one-hit wonder with this shuffling come on anchored by an inspired harmonica solo from Delbert McClinton. Channel wrote 'Hey! Baby' with Margaret Cobb and performed it for years before Fort Worth producer Major Bill Smith recorded it for LeCam records. When it was a local hit, Smash Records picked it up for national release. In 1962, it hit number two in the UK and went to the top of the US pop chart for three weeks, selling over one million copies and earning a gold disc. That same year, the Beatles opened for Channel on a European tour and John Lennon asked McClinton how to play the harmonica hook from this song.

Hey, hey hey baby!
I want to know if you'll be my girl
Hey, hey hey baby!
I want to know if you'll be my girl

When I saw you walking down the street
I said that's a kind of girl I'd like to meet
She's so pretty, Lord she's fine
I'm gonna make her mine all mine

Hey, hey hey baby!
I want to know if you'll be my girl

When you turned and walked away
That's when I want to say
C'mon baby, give me a whirl
I want to know if you'll be my girl

Hey, hey hey baby!
I want to know if you'll be my girl

When you turned and walked away
That's when I want to say
C'mon baby, give me a whirl
I want to know if you'll be my girl

Hey, hey hey baby!
I want to know if you'll be my girl
Hey, hey hey hey hey, baby
C'mon, baby now.....
