The Queen of Soul found a new record label and finally had her breakthrough with this landmark soul classic. After years of struggling with Columbia Records, Aretha Franklin decided not to renew her contract and instead signed a new deal with Atlantic Records. Producer Jerry Wexler thought the better of bringing her to Stax after his experience with Wilson Pickett; so he found another studio. The recording began at Muscle Shoals's Florence Alabama Music Enterprises (FAME) studios in Alabama and, after a disagreement between Franklin's husband and manager Ted White and folks at the studio, finished up at Atlantic Recording Studios in New York City. 'I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You' was engineered by Tom Dowd. It went to number two on the Billboard album chart and number one on the R&B albums chart. It was her eleventh album.

"I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" was written by Ronny Shannon. It was the first song she recorded in the sessions. Spooner Oldham stepped down and let Aretha play piano when he heard her chops. The single went to number nine on the pop chart and hit number one on the R&B chart.

"Dr. Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business)" was composed by Franklin and White.

"Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" was written by Dan Penn and Chips Moman. As the b-side to the titular single, it peaked at number thirty-seven on the R&B chart.

"A Change Is Gonna Come" is a cover of the Sam Cooke classic.
