'round about midnight

Miles Davis made the move to Columbia Records with his first great quintet and recorded this innovative jazz masterpiece. ''Round About Midnight' was recorded at Columbia Records studios during sessions in October of 1955, and later in June and September of 1956. With John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums; Davis' trumpet leads them through shades of classic bebop and into a new hard bop style improvising show tunes and old standards. Davis' triumphant appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival led to a meeting with Columbia producer George Avakian and a new record deal; but he was still under contract with Prestige Records, so the release of ''Round About Midnight' was delayed for two years while he fulfilled his contractual obligations with four albums recorded over two days: 'Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet', 'Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet', 'Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet', and 'Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet'.

"Dear Old Stockholm" is a traditional Swedish folk song that was arranged by Stan Getz.
