At the age of twenty-one, Stevie Wonder came into his own, renegotiated his contract with Motown, and gained complete artistic control for the production of the first of five consecutive masterpieces. Wonder was frustrated with the regimented recording process at the hit factory. After Barry Gordy refused to give him the kind of freedom he had given to Marvin Gaye, Wonder recorded two albums on his own to use in the negotiations that resulted in a higher royalty rate and the rights to his songs. Wonder produced 'Music of My Mind' with Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil from Tonto's Expanding Head Band, who would co-produce on four of those albums. With the exception of a trombone and an electric guitar track, Wonder played all of the instruments, which included keyboards, piano, Fender Rhodes, talk box, drums, Moog bass, bongos, Hohner clavinet, percussion, and, for the first time, "The Original New Timbral Orchestra" multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer which was designed by Cecil. The effect is a stunning leap forward that transformed popular music with Wonder's combination of personality and technology. 'Music of My Mind' was his biggest album to date, going to number twenty-one on the US album chart and peaking on number six on the R&B chart.

'Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)' is a two-part song that describes the relationship between Wonder and Syreeta, who became a singer after working as a secretary at Motown.
