ruby tuesday

The Rolling Stones hung a name on heartbreak with this mournful melody. Keith Richards says he came up with the song in a Los Angeles hotel room: "It was probably written about Linda Keith not being there. I don't know, she had pissed off somewhere. It was very mournful, very, very Ruby Tuesday and it was a Tuesday ... That's one of those things - some chick you've broken up with. And all you've got left is the piano and the guitar and a pair of panties. And it's goodbye you know. And so it just comes out of that. And after that you just build on it. It's one of those songs that are easiest to write because you're really right there and you really sort of mean it. And for a songwriter, hey break his heart and he'll come up with a good song." Bill Wyman says that Keith wrote the song himself; while Marianne Faithfull recalls that Brian Jones had played an early version of the tune to the band. In the studio, Jones played recorder and piano; while Richards and Wyman both played double bass. Mick Jagger calls it "a wonderful song. It's just a nice melody, really. And a lovely lyric. Neither of which I wrote, but I always enjoy singing it." In any case, the song was credited to Jagger and Richards. 'Ruby Tuesday' was released as a double-A single with 'Let's Spend the Night Together'. American DJ's preferred 'Ruby Tuesday' to the more suggestive 'Let's Spend the Night Together'. 'Ruby Tuesday' went to number three in Australia and number one in the US.

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...

Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothing's gained
And nothing's lost
At such a cost

There's no time to lose, I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...

While the provocative flip side didn't get as much airplay in the US, it peaked at number one in Germany. Jack Nitzsche and Keith Richards both play piano. Brian Jones plays organ. Keith plays bass instead of Bill Wyman. The band were allowed to perform the song on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' provided they change the lyrics in the title to "let's spend some time together."
