licensed to ill

The Beastie Boys combined heavy metal and hip-hop, took rap to the top of the charts, and made us all ill with their audaciously adolescent debut. They produced 'Licensed to Ill' with Rick Rubin for his label Def Jam. Sampling classic rock riffs, funk, soul, and TV themes to produce a pop-culture pastiche to support the trashy, rapid-fire vituperations of Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock. The band courted controversy with the overt sexism and violence of the lyrics and the ensuing tour; but they took the world by storm. 'Licensed to Ill' became the first rap album to reach the top of the US Billboard album chart and sold over five million copies.
