just an old sweet song

ray charles took this old sweet song to the top of the charts. it was written thirty years earlier by hoagie carmichael and stuart gorrell (who wrote the lyrics about hoagie's sister). it was on charles' concept album the genius hits the road featuring a dozen songs about different states of the union. almost two decades later it became the state song after ray performed it before the georgia state legislature as part of a healing gesture after the civil rights unrest in the sixties.

georgia, georgia
the whole day through
just an old sweet song
keeps georgia on my mind

i'm say georgia
georgia
a song of you
comes as sweet and clear
as moonlight through the pines

other arms reach out to me
other eyes smile tenderly
still in peaceful dreams i see
the road leads back to you

i said georgia,
ooh georgia, no peace i find
just an old sweet song
keeps georgia on my mind

other arms reach out to me
other eyes smile tenderly
still in peaceful dreams i see
the road leads back to you

georgia,
georgia,
no peace, no peace i find
just this old, sweet song
keeps georgia on my mind

i said just an old sweet song,
keeps georgia on my mind
