the zombies

The Zombies came to life with the clear and bright pop sophistication of this jazzy rhythm and blues revelation.  The group started out as The Mustangs while the members were still at school in the English town of  St Albans, Hertfordshire.  Rod Argent remembers:  "Colin [Blunstone]was a friend of the very original bass guitarist, Paul Arnold. I only met Colin for the very first time at the first Zombies rehearsal! He was originally going to be the rhythm guitarist; I was going to be the singer. At that first rehearsal, Colin heard me play the piano, and said I must play that in the band. I heard Colin sing a Ricky Nelson song, and said.... OK - but you have to be lead vocalist!"

Blunstone says: "For a long time we were just a little local band playing around St Albans and Hertfordshire. We had a good following, but it was very parochial. Things only started to happen in 1964 when we won a talent contest, which led to us being signed to Decca Records."

Argent adds: "I think I'm right in saying Decca offered us a deal before the final. The recording contract was supposed to be the big prize for the winners, but they signed us after the semi-final, which really gave us the confidence that we actually might be able to make a go of music as a full-time career."

The success of their first single ("She's Not There"  / "You Make Me Feel Good ") led to them recording their first long player.  The sessions were produced by Ken Jones and features  Colin Blunstone on lead vocal,  Rod Argent on keyboards and vocal,  Paul Atkinson on guitar,  Chris White on bass,  and Hugh Grundy on drums.  Released in the UK as 'Begin Here', the record would be altered slightly and released in the US as 'The Zombies'.

Well, no one told me about her
The way she lied
Well, no one told me about her
How many people cried

But it's too late to say you're sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don't bother trying to find her
She's not there

Well, let me tell you 'bout the way she looked
The way she acts and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there

Well, no one told me about her
What could I do?
Well, no one told me about her
Though they all knew

But it's too late to say you're sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don't bother trying to find her
She's not there

Well, let me tell you about the way she looked
The way she acts and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there

But it's too late to say you're sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don't bother trying to find her
She's not there

Well, let me tell you about the way she looked
The way she acts and the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool, her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there

"Tell Her No"  went to sixty in Australia, forty-two in the UK, and six in Canada and the US.

And if she should tell you "come closer"
And if she tempts you with her charms

Tell her no no no no no-no-no-no
No no no no no-no-no-no
No no no no no
Don't hurt me now for her love belongs to me

And if she should tell you "I love you"
And if she tempts you with her charms

Tell her no no no no no-no-no-no
No no no no no-no-no-no
(Don't take her love for your arms)
No no no no no
Don't hurt me now for her love belongs to me

I know she's the kind of girl
Who'd throw my love away
But I still love her so
Don't hurt me now, don't hurt me now

If she tells you "I love you"
Just remember she said that to me

Tell her no no no no no-no-no-no
No no no no no-no-no-no
(Don't take her love from my arms)
No no no no no
Don't leave me now for her love belongs to me
