trompe le monde

These alt-rock trouble makers thought they could fool the world; but they were really fooling themselves with this shimmering astro punk swan song. The Pixies recorded 'Trompe Le Monde' with Gil Norton at at Master Control and Pacifique, Burbank; at Studio des dames, Paris; and at Blackwing, London. Tensions between Francis and bassist Kim Deal had been steadily increasing as she had been shut out from bringing her compositions into the mix. Black Francis' emphasis on quirky space age concerns dominates the record to such an extent that it seems like a solo album. Though the would tour, it ended up being their final release together. 'Trompe Le Monde' became their third consecutive top ten album in the UK.

'Trompe Le Monde' means "deceive the world" in French.

"We went to the store and bought something great
Which samples this song from washington state"

'Head On' is a remake of the song by the Jesus and Mary Chain. It made it to number six on the US Modern Rock chart.

"Makes you want to feel
Makes you want to try
Makes you want to blow the stars from the sky"

'UMass' is a rocking satire of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where Francis met guitarist Joey Santiago. The guitar riff was written while they were enrolled there.

"In the sleepy west of the woody east
is a valley full, full o' pioneer
we're not just kids, to say the least
we got ideas to us that's dear
like capitalist, like communist
like lots of things you've heard about"

'Subbacultcha'

"i was looking handsome
she was looking like an erotic vulture
i was all dressed in black
she was all dressed up in black
every thing was fine down here
what you call it here
call it what you will here
way down down down in this subbacultcha"

'Letter To Memphis' also hit number six on the US Modern Rock chart.

"The day since i met her
i can't believe it's true
she came here from memphis
across the ocean sailing
and i saw her a i pleaded
why do you come so far and she said
trying to get to you"

'Motorway To Roswell' tells the story of an alien that ends up in a crate.

"On a holiday
For many miles
Looking for a place to stay
Near some friendly star
He found this mote
And now we wonder where we are"
