Peter Gabriel reached out from the inside and seized his pop culture moment with this transcendent love song. He wrote 'In Your Eyes' about his love affair with Rosanna Arquette. The version recorded for his album 'So' featured an African-influenced rhythm and vocals by Senegalese musician Youssou N’Dour, plus backing vocals from Michael Been, Jim Kerr, Ronnie Bright, and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The single made it to number twenty six on the US pop chart and became his third number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Three years later, the song was included on the soundtrack to Cameron Crowe's 'Say Anything'. Gabriel initially declined to let them use the song because it was so personal for him; but after seeing a tape of the film, he agreed. The iconic scene where John Cusack as Lloyd Dobler lifts his boombox over his head to serenade Ione Skye's Diane Court forever etched the song into our collective memory.
