that's all right / blue moon of kentucky

Elvis Presley's first single bridged country, blues, and soul to define rock and roll and create a whole new genre of music.  Although he had paid to record a couple of singles on his own at Sun Records, he had had no success trying to break into the local music scene. Presley was asked by Sam Phillips of Sun Records to record a ballad that he thought could break the 'black' sound to a larger audience.  The session was a disappointment; and late at night as they were ready to call it quits, Presley started goofing around during a break with an upbeat version of 'That's All Right' which had been recorded by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup with lyrics based on Blind Lemon Jefferson's 'Black Snake Moan'.  Upright bass player Bill Black and guitarist Winfield "Scotty" Moore joined in and Phillips, taken aback by the change in the music came in and told them to start over so he could get a recording.

Well, that's all right, mama
That's all right for you
That's all right mama, just anyway you do
Well, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

Mama she done told me,
Papa done told me too
'Son, that gal you're foolin' with,
She ain't no good for you'
But, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

I'm leaving town tomorrow
I'm leaving town for sure
Then you won't be bothered
With me hanging' round your door
But, that's all right, that's all right.

That's all right now mama, anyway you do

I ought to mind my papa
Guess I’m not too smart,
If I was I’d leave you
Go before you break my heart
But, that's all right, that's all right.
That's all right now mama, anyway you do

Later that week they recorded a version of Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky" on the suggestion of Black.  They did in the same sped up rockabilly style.

Blue moon, blue moon, blue moon
Keep shining bright
Blue moon, keep on shining bright
You're gonna bring me back my baby tonight
Blue moon, keep shining bright
I said blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
I said blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Well, it was on one moonlight night
Stars shining bright
Wish blown high
Love said good-bye
Blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Well, I said blue moon of Kentucky
Just keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
I said blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue
Blue moon of Kentucky
Keep on shining
Shine on the one that's gone and left me blue

Released on a single together, the two songs charted independently in the top ten of the local charts in Memphis, Nashville, and New Orleans; but failed to break into the national market.
