the ocean blue

The Ocean Blue made a splash with the dreamy pastoral jangle pop of their eponymous debut.  The group formed in Hersey, Pennsylvania while the members were still in high school.  Two of their demos were included on a local compilation and led to them getting signed to Sire Records by Seymour Stein.  'The Ocean Blue'  was produced by Mark Optiz and John Porter at Eden Studios and Matrix in London, England with  David Schelzel on vocals and guitar; Steve Lau on keyboards, saxophone, and vocals;  Bobby Mittan on bass guitar; and Rob Minnig on drums.

'The Ocean Blue' sold over one hundred an fifty thousand copies.   Schelzel reveals:  “I write music from a very integral part of me. It’s a natural means of expression that I employ as an artist. I don’t think everybody writes music for those reasons. They write music to make money, or to be on stage, or in the case of a Christian music artist because they want to reach people or because they want to spread the gospel. And those are pure motives, [but] I don’t know that [music] is the best way of tackling issues like Christianity, or deep spiritual or political issues. In the context of a pop song, especially, you cannot capture something as deep and broad as faith in a very direct way...I’m driven to write songs the way someone else might be driven to paint or write poems, so I think I’d be doing this sort of thing whether I was on Mercury Records or no record label at all. I’d be doing these things in my basement for myself. Of course, it wouldn’t be a way to pay the bills anymore.”

'Between Something and Nothing' went to number two on the US alternative chart.

'Drifting, Falling' hit number ten on the US alternative chart.  Schelzel says:   "I wrote “Drifting/Falling” while I was in high school. It was my perspective on how I felt at the time as a young man about to graduate and go into the world and how fast life was changing."
