risqué

Chic brought on the good times with the deep and provocative grooves of this influential disco landmark.  After the massive success of 'C'est Chic' and its chart-topping single 'Le Freak', the band went right to work on the follow up.  'Risqué' features Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin on lead vocals;   Bernard Edwards on vocals and bass guitar;  Nile Rodgers on guitar and vocals;  and Tony Thompson on drums;   with Fonzi Thornton, Michelle Cobbs, and Ulland McCullough on vocals;  Robert Sabino, Andy Schwartz, and Raymond Jones on keyboards;  Sammy Figueroa on percussion;  Gene Orloff as concert master of The Chic Strings:  Karen Karlsrud, Cheryl Hong, Karen Milne, and Valerie Haywood;  Jon Faddis and Ellen Seeling on trumpet;  Alex Foster and Jean Fineberg,  on saxophone;  and Barry Rodgers on trombone.  Everything was recorded and mixed  in New York at Power Station and mastered at Atlantic Studios by Chic Organization Ltd. producers Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers with sound engineer Bob Clearmountain.

Rodgers said at the time:   "We're in the midst of working on the third Chic album and this one is definitely going to be the best! Our single, "The Good Times" is out now and the album should follow in a couple of weeks. I can honestly say it's the most powerful, most artistic, most commercial album we've done — if that's possible!   Harmonically, it's the most complex and yet melodically, it's the most simple. We've got "My Feet Keep Dancing" which is definitely going to be a biggie, "Warm Summer Night" which has a Latin feel, the uptempo "Forbidden Lover" and "You Fooled Around" and a real emotional gem, "When You Hear This Song, Will You Cry?" — naturally a ballad...We just took the time off and locked it up by going to the Bahamas, Miami and Los Angeles and getting away — it was the only way. But as you can see from the tour we've got to do, we can't exactly do that so we'll just have to do it in whatever spare moments we have!"

Edwards revealed:   "Both Nile and I are jazz musicians and both have studied classical music too. I spent years with all this heavy stuff, until things clear and you realise that a lot of what you're doing is just the same old ego-tripping.  The two of us, with our drummer Tony Thompson – he used to be Labelle's drummer – could walk into a studio and sweat off some stuff that could floor these so-called serious music guys. But for what?   Look, have whatever in your collection at home, but everybody needs a little Friday night. And really that is Chic. No big deal. Y'know, smile, dance, get crazy...we sure do while we're making it, because music is our leeezshure, it's my fun...Eventually, Nile and myself would like to back out and let Chic continue with us just producing. At the moment we've still got other things. We've just finished recording Sister Sledge, and next month we go in with Aretha Franklin.   But while it's still a groove we'd like to just ride it out."

'Risqué' skated to number seventy-five in Australia, thirty-seven in Sweden, twenty-nine in the UK, fifteen in Canada, five on the US pop chart, and number two on the US R&B chart.

"Good Times"
became their second and final number one hit.

Good times
These are the good times
Leave your cares behind
These are the good times
Good times
These are the good times
Our new state of mind
These are the good times

Happy days are here again
The time is right
For makin' friends
Let's get together
How 'bout a quarter to ten
Come tomorrow
Let's all do it again

Boys will be boys
Better let them have their toys
Girls will be girls
Cute pony tails and curls
Must put an end
To this stress and strife
I think I want to live the sporting life

Good times
These are the good times
Leave your cares behind
These are the good times
Good times
These are the good times
Our new state of mind
These are the good times

A rumor has it that
It's getting late
Time marches on
Just can't wait
The clock keeps turning
Why hesitate
You silly fool
You can't change your fate
Let's cut a rug
A little jive and jitterbug
We want the best
We won't settle for less
Don't be a drag
Participate
Clams on the half shell
And roller-skates
Roller-skates

Good times
These are the good times
Leave your cares behind
These are the good times
Good times
These are the good times
Our new state of mind
These are the good times
