'Trane released his first record with Atlantic and made the move from bebop to free jazz with these modal renditions of jazz standards. His new quartet included McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, Steve Davis on bass, and, for the first time, Coltrane on soprano saxophone. They explored new musical territory within the familiar framework of these well loved tunes.
