Forty five years ago this trio of American expatriates had their second number one hit in the UK with this remake of a failed single by the Four Seasons. Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote several hits for the Four Seasons; but this one failed to chart. The (unrelated) Walker Brothers recorded their version very closely to the "wall of sound" arrangement of the original. In England the song is associated with the death of London gangster George Cornell. Ronnie Kray walked into the Blind Beggar Pub and shot his rival as this song was playing on the jukebox. A stray bullet hit the machine, causing the song to skip on the line "anymore ... anymore" as Cornell lay dying.
Loneliness is a coat you wear
The dark shade of blue is always there
Emptiness is a place you're in
With nothing to lose and nothing to win
The sun ain't gonna shine anymore
The moon ain't gonna rise in the sky
The tears are always clouding your eyes
When you're without her
Lonely without you, baby
So lonely
I can't go on
On without her
