Sam Moore and Dave Prater teamed up in the swamps of Stax with Booker T. & the MG's and the Mar-Key Horns for the pure Memphis soul of their first album. The MG's guitarist Steve "The Colonel" Cropper co-wrote many of the songs; but it was Issac Hayes and David Porter who inspired the duo to adopt the call-and-response gospel sound of their live shows instead of the crooner style of their early singles.

'Hold On, I'm Comin' was written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter at Stax. The title came about when Hayes was getting impatient with Porter spending too much time in the bathroom and starting yelling for him to come back and get back to work on a song. His response, "Hold on, man, I'm coming!" They had the song written in ten minutes. It topped the Black singles chart and made it to number twenty one on the pop chart.
Another Hayes and Porter song, 'You Don't Know Like I Know', made it to number seven on the R&B chart becoming the first of a long string of hits.
