keep on running

Seventeen year old little Stevie Winwood had his first number one song with his brother Muff in the Spencer Davis Group. Island impresario Chris Blackwell asked Jamaican singer-songwriter Jackie Edwards if he had anything that the band could record. Steve Winwood reworked the ska tune into a rock sound using a fuzzbox effect on the guitar. Blackwell produced the single with a loan from Scala Brown Associates obtained by offering a large share of the Island label as security. With the success of the song, he was able to pay off the loan without losing the shares.

Keep on runnin’Keep on hidin’
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man
Hey hey hey
Everyone is talkin’ about me
Makes me feel so bad
Hey hey hey
Everyone is laughing at me
Makes me feel so sad
Keep on runnin’
Hey hey
All right!
Keep on runnin’
Runnin’ from my arms
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man

Hey hey hey
Everyone is talkin’ about me
Makes me feel so sad
Hey hey hey
Everyone is laughin’ at me
Makes me feel so bad
Keep on runnin’
Runnin’ from my arms
One fine day I’m gonna be the one
To make you understand
Oh yeah
I’m gonna be your man
