sweethearts on parade

Eighty years ago Louis Armstrong & His Sebastian New Cotton Club Orchestra recorded this sweet little gem during their engagement at the club in Los Angeles. Armstrong had gone out to join Les Hite's band and became the star of the show. This song was originally done by Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians two years before. It swings slowly and Louis sings with improvisational daring until the breakout section at the end where the rhythm picks up and Satchmo wails wonderfully on his trumpet over the band.

Oh two by two
They go marching through
Oh the sweethearts on parade

And how I cried
As they passed me by
Those sweethearts up on parade

I'd love to join them but they won’t even look
It takes more than one to join the army of love

And how I pine
As they fall in line
All those sweethearts on parade

Sweethearts on parade
Sweethearts on parade
Sweethearts on parade
Sweethearts on parade
Sweethearts on parade
