The Fab Four made their first drug reference and took us half the way there. 'Day Tripper' was released with 'We Can Work It Out' as the first double-A single. It went to number one in the UK, but only went to number five in the US. John came up with the basis of the song as a bit of a teaser to Paul (who hadn't yet) as well as a play on words: "Day trippers are people who go on a day trip, right? Usually on a ferryboat or something. But the song was kind of... you're just a weekend hippie. Get it?" Paul took up the cause of this "tongue-in-cheek song about someone who was committed only in part to the idea" and came up with the verses. This promotional film of them lip-synching was one of the first music videos.
