stand!

Sly and the Family Stone stood up for freedom and tolerance and took us higher with different strokes for different folks on this funky manifesto.   The band had developed their integration of styles through 'Dance to the Music' and 'Life'; but with 'Stand!' everything came together perfectly.  With its socially conscious message of integration, the album coalesces their diverse musical fusion while reflecting the diversity of the individual members of the group.

Sylvester "Sly" Stone produced the album and handled vocals, organ, guitar, piano, harmonica, vocoder, and bass guitar on 'You Can Make It If You Try";   Freddie Stone provided vocals and guitar;  Larry Graham did vocals and bass guitar;  Rose Stone did vocals, piano, and keyboard;  Cynthia Robinson played trumpet and did vocal ad-libs and background vocals on "I Want to Take You Higher";  Jerry Martini played saxophone and did background vocals on "I Want to Take You Higher";  Greg Errico played drums and did background vocals on "I Want to Take You Higher";  and Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, Elva Mouton) provided background vocals on "Stand!", "Sing a Simple Song", "Everyday People", and "I Want to Take you Higher".  Most of the sessions took place at   Pacific High Recording Studios in San Francisco.

'Stand!' went to number thirteen on the US album chart and number three on the R&B chart.

The leadoff single 'Everyday People' became the band's first number one single and their most enduring hit.  The call for us to accept one another also featured the first instance of the slap bass technique that would soon be a staple of the funk sound.

Sometimes I'm right but I can be wrong
My own beliefs are in my song
The butcher, the banker, the drummer and then
Makes no difference what group I'm in
'Cause I am everyday people, yeah, yeah

There is a blue one who can't accept the green one

For living with a fat one, trying to be a skinny one
And different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and Scooby dooby doo-bee
Oh, sha sha, we got to live together

I am no better and neither are you

We are the same whatever we do
You love me, you hate me, you know me and then
You can't figure out the bag I'm in
'Cause I am everyday people

There is a long hair that doesn't like the short hair

For being' such a rich one, that will not help the poor one
Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and Scooby dooby doo-bee
Oh, sha sha, we got to live together

There is a yellow one that won't accept the black one

That won't accept the red one, that won't accept the white one
Different strokes for different folks
And so on and so on and Scooby dooby doo-bee
Oh, sha sha

'Cause I am everyday people

'Cause I am everyday people
'Cause I am everyday people
'Cause I am everyday people
