back to black

This soulful siren stomped onto the world stage and stole our hearts with the sassy, sultry style of her sophomore album. Amy Winehouse became a critical darling with her jazzy debut 'Frank'; but after a painful breakup with Blake Fielder-Civil, she dropped out of the spotlight and put her pain into these more direct and emotional songs. Producers Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson recorded her vocals on vintage equipment to get that rich tone. 'Back to Black' went to the top of the charts in seventeen countries and won five Grammy Awards.

The instant classic 'Rehab' was her first top ten in the UK and her only one in the US. It refers to Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway. It won three Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and was nominated for two more Grammy Awards that year.

"They tried to make me go to rehab
I said, "no, no, no"
Yes, I been black
But when I come back, you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab
I won't go, go, go

I'd rather be at home with a Ray
I ain't got seventy days
'Cause there's nothing, there's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway"

The hip hop jazz of 'You Know I'm No Good' was a top ten hit in Switzerland.

"I cheated myself,
Like I knew I would,
I told you I was trouble,
You know that I'm no good"

The stunning title track concerns different kinds of addiction. 'Back To Black' made it to number three in Australia.

"We only said goodbye with words I died a hundred times
You go back to her And I go back to, I go back to us
I love you much, it's not enough
You love blow and I love puff And life is like a pipe
And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside "

The weepy 'Love Is A Losing Game' reached number thirty three in both Ireland and the UK.

For you I was a flame, love is a losing game
Five story fire as you came, love is a losing game
One I wished I never played, oh what a mess we made
And now the final frame, love is a losing game

Played out by the band, love is a losing hand
More than I could stand, love is a losing hand
Self-professed, profound, 'til the tips were down
Know you're a gambling man, love is a losing hand

Though I'm rather blind, love is a fair resign
Memories mar my mind, love it is a fair resign
Over a few tiles, and laughter by the docks
And now the final frame, love is a losing game

The stomp of 'My Tears Dry On Their Own' samples the backing music from 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The single peaked at number sixteen in the UK.

He walks away, the sun goes down
He takes the day but I'm gone
And in your way in this blue shade
My tears dry on their own
