Matthew Sweet turned heartbreak into his breakthrough with this powerpop tour de force. After two unsuccessful albums on two different labels, he found himself without a contract and in the midst of a divorce. Sweet remembers, "I thought I might have to find another career or get a job at the 7-Eleven." Instead, he got a deal with Zoo Entertainment and formed a new band with Richard Lloyd, Robert Quine, Greg Leisz, Lloyd Cole, and Fred Maher. Sweet says, "It's funny how the album ended up showing everything I needed to feel. Everything I needed as an antidote is there." He produced the album with Maher at Axis Studios in New York. The working title 'Nothing Lasts' was changed when actress Tuesday Weld, whose picture is on the album cover, objected to it. The personal lyrics and dynamic guitar sound of the album resonated with critics and fans alike, and has given him his most enduring success. Sweet explains,"'Girlfriend' was such a simple, emotional, relationship sort of record, and it could apply to so many people in relationships."
'Girlfriend' reached number four on the Modern Rock chart and number ten on the Mainstream Rock chart. and features anime clips from the movie 'Space Adventure Cobra'.
'I've Been Waiting' uses anime clips of 'Urusei Yatsura' character Lum Invader.
'Evangaline' is sung from the point of view of Johnny Six from the comic book 'Evangeline' about a sexy killer vigilante nun.
The inspired guitar interplay between Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine drove 'Divine Intervention' to number twenty three on the Modern Rock chart.
