private revolution

Karl Wallinger left the Waterboys to record this spiritually-minded ecological celebration in his home. World Party was essentially a one-man band with Wallinger getting a bit of help from fellow Waterboys Anthony Thistlethwaite and Steve Wickham, as well as a then-unknown Sinéad O'Connor. Karl remembers, "It was just sort of frustrating... .On the one hand, I was enjoying doing this stuff with Mike [Scott]. On the other hand, I knew I had some songs that should get out. At first, I thought of my solo work as running alongside the Waterboys'. But that was impractical; it turns out to be a full-time job." Nigel Grainge from the Ensign label gave him a contract after hearing some of the demos he made on his 16-track recorder, and Wallinger set up a studio at his home in the countryside. He made up names like Rufus Dove, Will Towyn, and Millennium Mills as pseudonyms to fill out the party guest list on his 'Private Revolution'. Channelling musical heroes like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Prince, he used lots of synthesizers and sampling to fill out the sound of his songs addressing individual responsibility in a troubled world. The album made it to number fifty-six in the UK and thirty-nine on the US album chart. Karl said the band comprises "me and whoever's playing with me at any given time. But when I'm playing with people—then all of us playing really are World Party."

'Ship of Fools' was the debut single, peaking at forty-two in the UK, number twenty-seven on the US pop chart, and number five on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.
"We're setting sail
To the place on the map from which no one has ever returned
Drawn by the promise of the joker and the fool
By the light of the crosses that burn
Drawn by the promise of the women and the lace
And the gold and the cotton and pearls
It's the place where they keep all the darkness you need
You sail away from the light of the world on this trip baby"

'All Come True' has the vibe of psychedelic Rolling Stones.
"Got to find the brightness is the soul.
Not look outside to find out where we are.
Oh, you won't be satisfied.
Til you make posessions of the stars."
'Private Revolution' evokes the sound of Prince singing a duet with Mick Jagger.
"If you want a revolution, baby,
There is nothing like your own.
You don't have to do all those burning books -
Revolutionize at home."
