jaco pastorius

When this bass virtuoso released his star-studded eponymous debut album, it created seismic shock waves throughout the world of jazz. Jaco Pastorius switched from drums to bass guitar after he injured his wrist playing football. He played with numerous local groups before recording with Gary Burton, Bob Moses, and Pat Metheny. Bobby Colomby, the drummer from Blood, Sweat and Tears produced Jaco's debut album for CBS, bringing in an incredible array of talent with which to collaborate: the likes of Don Alias, Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Wayne Shorter, and Lenny White. Despite this impressive roster of studio musicians, the real star is the singing bass. Pastorius made innovations with harmonics, showed impressive skills with soloing and composition, and his style and sound showed amazing depth and versatility.
