macarena

Los del Río became the biggest one hit wonder of all time with this Andalusian flamenco rumbapop and its accompanying dance. Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruíz Perdigones were inspired to compose the song during a private party in Venezuela where local flamenco teacher, Diana Patricia Cubillán Herrera, performed. Monge recited some of the lyrics spontaneously, dubbing the dancer "Ma'dalena": "Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Ma'dalena, que tu cuerpo e' pa' darle alegría y cosa' güena'" ("Give your body some joy, Magdalene, 'cause your body is for giving joy and good things too"). "Magdalena" is a reference to Mary Magdalene and her rumored past, which in the Andalusian culture is associated with sensuousness. Spanish versions of the song were hits in Spain, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, eventually spreading to Latin clubs in Miami and New York. It became a worldwide hit after it was remixed by the Bayside Boys with lyrics in English by Carlos de Yarza. This version of 'Macarena' spent fourteen weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and hit number one in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and on the European Hot 100 Singles chart.

When I dance they call me Macarena
And the boys they say que soy buena
They all want me, they can't have me
So they all come and dance beside me
Move with me, chat with me
And if I could I'd take you home with me

Now don't you worry about my boyfriend
The boy who's name is Vitorino
I don't want him, couldn't stand him
He was no good so I
Now come on, what was I suppose to do
He was out of town and his two friends were so fine

Come find me, my name is Macarena
Always at the party con las chicas que estan buenas
Come join me, dance with me
And all you fellas chat along with me

Que se llama de apellido Vitorino,
Que en la jura de bandera el muchacho
Se la dio con dos amigos

Macarena, Macarena, Macarena
Que le gusta los veranos de Marbella

Que le gusta la movida guerrilera

Macarena sueña con El Corte Ingles
Que se compra los modelos mas modernos

Y ligar un novio nuevo
