young folks

PB&J whistled their way up the charts and into our hearts talkin' 'bout their own style. Swedish indie group Peter Bjorn and John had their breakthrough success with the first single from their third album 'Writer's Block'. 'Young Folks' features vocals from Victoria Bergsman, the former lead singer of Swedish band The Concretes. The whistled hook was originally intended as a marker for a future instrument before the trio realized that it was just what the song needed.

Peter Morén says "I remember the first day we played it in a small disco in Stockholm. It felt like every person in the club came up to ask what it was. Two years on, I can look back and see that the song was an antidote to something in the air. It belongs to everyone now, they get their own feelings out of it - it's not ours any more."

“The whole thing happened so fast,” explains Björn Yttling. “There’s always going to be 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da', and those guys didn’t try to do even better.”

John Eriksson recalls "Peter was doing film studies and afterwards was studying in order to become a librarian. Björn was working within schools and was also playing keyboards in other Swedish bands, The Soundtrack of Our Lives and Caesars. I was a classical percussionist. I used to be in a symphonic orchestra and then in a percussion ensemble, full-time for seven or eight years. It happened a lot. Then we did this third record, 'Writer's Block'. We said OK, let's make this record, because the first two did OK in Sweden and Norway, but nothing special. We said, let's give it another try. And then everything happened of course. 'Young Folks' is like the first time you have Italian food. It's good but you want to try more. It's the best thing that can happen to a band like us, to have something that people recognise. Because if we didn't have that, then people would never want to listen to, for example, our instrumental stuff."

'Young Folks' hit number thirty three on the UK charts in 2006 and was re-released in 2007, reaching number thirteen. Ted Malmros directed the video with animation by Graham Samuels.

If I told you things I did before, told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word, had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me?

I did before and had my share, it didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did, who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too

And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

Usually when things have gone this far people tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do
I can tell there's something goin' on, hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving, I'm still with you

It doesn't matter what we do, where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too

And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

And we don't care about the young folks
Talking 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talking 'bout the old style too

And we don't care about our own faults
Talking 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you

Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you
