runt. the ballad of todd rundgren

Singer/songwriter/studio wizard Todd Rundgren released this modest transitional masterwork between Nazz and his official solo work. This was his second album with his studio band Runt which this time around included four different drummers and two different bassists supporting him as he plays everything else. 'Runt. The Ballad of Todd Rundgren' shows him smoothing out the rough edges and getting more introspective, though there are rockers and sillyness amid the sadness. The album cover shows him at a piano with a noose around his neck, which is a jokey reference to the sniffly subject matter of much of the songs as well as the way piano players have often risked the ire of their audiences. Channelling Laura Nyro and Stevie Wonder, Rundgren creates his own signature sound and sets the stage for his next album.
