James Brown recorded his raw and ready first single when he was only twenty-two. His idol Little Richard had written the words of the title on a napkin that Brown carried around and eventually turned into a song with Johnny Terry. The Famous Flames played it in their repertoire for two years before Clint Brantley got them to record a demo at WIBB, a radio station in his home town of Macon, Georgia. The raw sound scared off many record labels; but Ralph Bass loved it so much he flew the band to Cincinnati to cut a new version at King Records Studios. His boss Syd Nathan thought it was trash; so Bass signed Brown to the Federal subsidiary. The song made it to number five on the R&B chart and eventually sold a million copies.
