The Wrecking Crew provided a sound that was warmer than the warmest sunshine and elevated Pet to the top of the charts. Tony Hatch wrote it for her while flying from London to LA to meet her. On the flight he was putting the finishing touches on another song for her called 'The Life and Soul of the Party' when the passenger sitting next to him told him the title meant nothing to American ears. He quickly wrote this song to replace it, beginning as he flew over the North Pole. It was recorded at Western Studios in Hollywood, California. 'Downtown' became the first single by a British woman ever to reach number one on the American pop charts; and with 'My Love' she became the first to have two. The former child star of 'Pet's Parlour' variety show on the BBC went on the become the biggest female singer in British chart history.
