Bob Marley and the Wailers came in from the cold on the zion train to emancipate us from mental slavery with love and work in this eschatological insurrection. The groundbreaking ska group had been formed in Kingston in 1963 by Hubert Winston McIntosh (Peter Tosh), Neville Livingston (Bunny Wailer), and Robert Nesta Marley (Bob Marley) who released several albums (The Wailing Wailers, Soul Rebels, Soul Revolution, Catch a Fire, and Burnin') before Tosh and Wailer left the group; only to continue with a new lineup to record a series of increasingly successful studio albums (Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration, Exodus, Kaya, and Survival) and two live documents (Live! and Babylon by Bus).
'Uprising' was recorded with Bob Marley on lead vocal, rhythm guitar, and acoustic guitar; Aston "Family Man" Barrett on bass, piano, guitar, and percussion; Carlton Barrett on drums and percussion; Carlton "Santa" Davis on drums; Tyrone Downie on keyboards and backing vocal; Alvin Patterson on percussion; Junior Marvin on lead guitar and backing vocal; Earl Lindo on keyboards; Al Anderson on lead guitar; and the I Threes (Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths and Judy Mowatt) on backing vocals. The band produced the sessions alongside executive producer Chris Blackwell with engineer Errol Brown and his assistant Chiao Ng at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica.
Marley would express: "We are in a struggle to be free, to eat. This music is about struggle. Reggae is a vehicle to carry a message of freedom and peace...We know that there is a God Jah Rastafari, Selassie I. I believe in Selassie I more than I believe in myself. And I believe in myself...I do everything for Selassie I. I sing for Selassie I. If I eat a grape (and he dramatically reached for and ate a grape) I do it because Selassie I wills it...Jesus Christ came to earth and said 'In 2,000 years I will come again. Well, 2,000 years have come and Selassie I is on earth. Now is the time...I am Rasta. I need black roots. Someone has to keep the roots...This must have some meaning for us, for why we do it."
'Uprising' reached number forty-five on the US pop album chart; forty-one on the US R&B albums chart; six in Australia, Norway, and the UK; three in Sweden; and number one in New Zealand.

Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved and be loved
Don't let them fool you
Or even try to school you, Oh! No
We've got a mind of our own
So go to hell if what you're thinkin' isn't right
Love would never leave us alone
In the darkness there must come out to light
Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved and be loved
The road of life is rocky
And you may stumble too
So while you point your fingers
Someone else is judgin' you
Love your brotherman
Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?
Could you be, could you be loved?
Don't let them change you
Or even rearrange you, Oh! No
We've got a life to live
They say only, only
Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive
Stay alive
Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved and be loved
You ain't gonna miss your water
Until your well runs dry
No matter how you treat him
The man will never be satisfied
Could you be, could you be, could you be loved
Could you be, could you be loved
Could you be, could you be loved
Say something, say something, say something
Say something
Reggae, Reggae
Say something
Rockers, Rockers
Say something could you be loved
"Redemption Song" charted at number twenty-two in New Zealand.
Old pirates, yes, they rob I,
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won't you help to sing
These songs of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have,
Redemption songs children
Redemption songs
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
None but our self can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it,
We've got to fulfill de book.
Won't you help to sing
Another song of freedom?
'Cause all I ever have,
Redemption songs,
Redemption songs,
Sing a wi' me children,
In every way, now,
In everyday,
In every way,
In everyday
Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,
None but our self can free our mind.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall dey kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it's just a part of it,
We've got to fulfill de book.
Won't you help to sing, oh
Another song of freedom? yeah child
'Cause all I ever had, did ya know?
Redemption songs.
Sing the harmony,
Redemption songs,
Jam'on with me, children!
In every way now,
In everyday,
In every way now,
In every way.
