who is jill scott? words and sounds vol. 1

Jill Scott found the way to elevation through the verbal elation of this neo-soul revelation.   She grew up in North Philadelphia and dropped out of Temple University, starting out performing at poetry readings where she was discovered by Questlove of the Roots.   After co-writing their Grammy-winning song "You Got Me" on 'Things Fall Apart', she worked with Eric BenetWill Smith, and Common,   She became the first act signed to the new 'Hidden Beach Recordings' label.

Her debut album 'Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1' was recorded at Philadelphia's  A Touch of Jazz Studios with a slew of producers:    Andre Harris  (tracks: A2, A5, B1, B4,), Carvin Haggins (tracks: C1), DJ Jazzy Jeff (tracks: A3), Darren Henson (tracks: A1,B4,C4), James Poyser (tracks: A3,D3), Keith Pelzer (tracks: B2,B3,D1), Ted Thomas (tracks: C6), and Vidal Davis (tracks: A4, A5, B4, B5, C1, C2, C5, D2, D4);  all under the direction of executive producer label owner Steve McKeever.   The sessions featured   Jill Scott on vocals and vocal arrangement;  Jafar Barron on trumpet;     Vidal Davis on drums, engineering, and vocal arrangement;   Larry Gold on cello, string arrangements, and string conduction;    Andre Harris on drums and percussion;  Emma Kummrow, Charles Parker,  Igor Szwec, and Gregory Teperman on violin;   Keith Pelzer on engineering, keyboards, mixing, synthesizer, and bass;    James Poyser on keyboards;    Ted Thomas, Jr. on bass, drums, keyboards, and percussion;    Jeff Townes on bass and engineering;   and  DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mos Def, and Black Thought on vocals.

Scott says:   “Honestly, I’m gonna tell you, I didn’t really decide what I was going to do.  What I’m doing chose me. I just followed the path that opened up for me. It wasn’t anything that I was trying to do. I write because I love it, and because it’s a necessity like breathing...It’s music. It’s writing. It’s experiences. It’s vulnerability. It’s honesty. It’s being a woman – an African-American woman. Being a daughter and a sister, and a grandchild, and a godmother. It’s life. It’s deeper than what I know. It’s bigger than what I can see. I guess it’s a dive into the human spirit...I was fearful in the beginning, because I had just started a new career. But I figured if this is what it was and [wondered whether] it was going to be permanent. Certain things you just have to accept, and be grateful for what you have...[I’m] just really appreciative. Cause so many of those folks didn’t know me, never met me, but still they called, and wrote and emailed and faxed me. And it was a very big part of me feeling better and accepting what was going on...I just can’t imagine. To treat me like something other than Jill from Philly, who dropped out of college in the third year, and didn’t get a degree. ..but just writes because she has to? Jill who has a dog… Jill who don’t comb her hair all the time? I’m just Jill Scott.”

'Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1'  reached number seventy-eight in the Netherlands, sixty-nine in the UK, forty-seven in New Zealand, thirty-seven in Norway, twenty-seven in Sweden, seventeen on the US pop album chart, and number two on the US heatseekers chart and the US R&B chart.   The album was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards, while "Gettin' in the Way", "A Long Walk", and "He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)" were nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2001, 2002, and 2003, respectively.

You're here, I'm pleased
I really dig your company
Your style, your smile, your peace mentality
Lord, have mercy on me
I was blind, now I can see
What a king's supposed to be
Baby I feel free, come on and go with me

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe we can talk about Surah 31:18

Your background it ain't squeaky clean (shit)
Sometimes we all got to swim upstream
You ain't no saint, we all are sinners
But you put your good foot down and make your soul a winner
I respect that, man you're so phat
And you're all that, plus supreme
Then you're humble man I'm numb
Yo with feeling, I can feel everything that you bring

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe we can talk about Revelation 3:17

Or maybe we can see a movie
Or maybe we can see a play on Saturday (Saturday)
Or maybe we can roll a tree and feel the breeze and listen to a symphony
Or maybe chill and just be, or maybe
Maybe we can take a cruise and listen to the Roots or maybe eat some passion fruit
Or maybe cry to the blues
Or maybe we could just be silent
Come on, Come on

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe we can talk about Surah 31:18

Let's take a long walk around the park after dark
Find a spot for us to spark
Conversation, verbal elation, stimulation
Share our situations, temptations, education, relaxations
Elevations, maybe baby, maybe we can save the nation
Come on, Come on
