These three young brothers had their first and biggest hit with this equally reviled and revered bubblegum doo-wop pop song about the futility of life. Hanson was comprised of Isaac, Taylor, and Zac Hanson who grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their parents encouraged them to sing and play music as children, each of them learning to play piano and guitar. Taylor and Zac also picked up the drums. After a couple of independent albums, the band met manager Christopher Sabe after playing at the South By Southwest music festival. They were signed to Mercury Records after Steve Greenberg saw them at the Kansas State Fair. Their major label debut 'Middle of Nowhere' was produced by the Dust Brothers, including a reworked version of 'MMMbop' from one of their earlier albums. It was released as their first single and rocketed to the top of the charts around the world in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the US.
Drummer Zac says 'MMMbop' "started out really as the background part for another song. We were making our first independent album and we were trying to come up with a background part. We started singing a slightly different incarnation of what is now the chorus of 'MMMbop'. That sort of stuck in our heads and never really worked as a background part, and over a couple of years, that piece really has stuck in our heads and we really crafted the rest of the song - the verses and bridge and so on. What that song talks about is, you've got to hold on to the things that really matter. 'MMMbop' represents a frame of time or the futility of life. Things are going to be gone, whether it's your age and your youth, or maybe the money you have, or whatever it is, and all that's going to be left are the people you've nurtured and have really built to be your backbone and your support system."
Keyboardist Taylor considers: " I think it's honestly hard to succeed whether you start out really young or you go into it at twenty or forty. You have to live and breathe music, and it has to be something you're just committed to...I will say that one of the hardest things to do is to survive success and in some ways it's easier than surviving failure because when you do succeed, and you reach a place you want to be, just figuring out how to maintain that and also just maintain focus and perspective is a challenge."
Guitarist Isaac remembers: "We were a lot younger and a lot greener. A lot, maybe, less jaded about people's potential perception of who we were. We just went out there and did what we did, loved what we did and didn’t think about anything else other than that. Our fan base certainly embraced it wholeheartedly. I think in some cases people looked at us and thought, 'Oh, those guys are a novelty,' and I understand that. But at the end of the day, all I can say about all that is, we're pretty much the same band we were then as we are now, just a little bit older and maybe, not quite as energetic...It is an interesting phenomenon to have made such a big splash. We never would have thought that 'MMMbop' would have done what it did. The unfortunate irony is, 'MMMbop' these days, as far as how much it was played, wouldn't even break the top five. I hope that if anything else, people would see a group of young guys who, first and foremost, loved good songs."

Oh oh oh oh oh
Yeah
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh
So hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care?
Ooooh ok yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du
Yeah
Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du bop, Ba du dop
Ba du

In an Mmmbop they're gone

Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows

The original version of the song from their independent 'MMMbop' album before the Dust Brothers got a hold of it.
The band still performs the song; but in a lower key since their voices have changed.
