After the breakup of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young; Stephen Stills teamed up with Chris Hillman to create a band called Manassas and his magnum opus with this satisfying and stylistic schmorgesborg of rock infused with folk, blues, gospel, latin, country, and bluegrass. The septet also included CSNY rhythm section of Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuel and Dallas Taylor, Blues Image percussionist Joe Lala, keyboardist Paul Harris, and Al Perkins on guitar joining Stills and Hillman to create a stunning triple guitar onslaught. Their diverse eponymous double-album debut included contributions from Jerry Aiello on keyboards, Byron Berline on fiddle, Roger Bush on acoustic bass, Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar, Sydney George on harmonica, and Bill Wyman on bass. Produced by Still, Hillman, and Taylor; the music on the album flows seemlessly from one track to another. Each side features a suite that has it's own musical focus and title: the latin groove rock of side one is called 'The Raven', the countryfied bluegrass gospel of side two is 'The Wilderness', the folk rock of side three is 'Consider', and the bluesy rock of side four is 'Rock & Roll is Here to Stay'. 'Manassas' went to number four on the US album chart.
