ABBA continued their string of massive singles with this dramatic breakup song that reflected divisions forming within the band. 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' was written by keyboardist Benny Andersson, guitarist Björn Ulvaeus, and the band's manager Stig Anderson. Ulvaeus says: "I think I wrote 'Knowing Me Knowing You' before the divorce. In many ways, Agnetha and my divorce was an amicable one, we just grew apart and decided let's split up. Benny and Frida's was a little more difficult. It was not a happy time but still very creative."
They recorded the song at the Metronome studio in Stockholm during sessions for their album 'Arrival'. Anni-Frid Lyngstad did the lead vocal and Agnetha Fältskog, Benny, and Bjorn sang backup. 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' went to number fourteen on the US Hot 100; number nine in Australia and France; number eight in New Zealand; number seven on the US Adult Contemporary chart; number six in Norway; number two in Austria, the Netherlands, and Belgium; and topped the charts in Ireland, Mexico, West Germany, and the UK. In Germany, it was their sixth consecutive number one. In Britain, it began another run of three consecutive number one singles.
