tim buckley

At the age of nineteen, Tim Buckley made his dramatic debut with this whistful eponymous collection of romantic psychedelic baroque folk songs. He co-wrote many of the songs with Larry Beckett while they were high school students in a band called the Bohemians. After playing in folk clubs around Los Angeles, Buckley was offered a contract with Elektra records by label owner Jac Holzman. Recorded in three days at Sunset Sound, ‘Tim Buckley’ was produced by Holzman and Paul Rothchild and engineered by Bruce Botnick. The combination of Lee Underwood’s jangly electric guitar raga and Billy Mundi's drumming evoked the soul-manifesting sound of the emerging psychedelic movement. Van Dyke Parks played piano, celesta, and harpsichord, and the string arrangements were done by Jack Nitzsche; but it was the emotional intensity of Buckley's amazing voice that took center stage.
