funky butt buddy bolden blues

Charles "Buddy" Bolden
(September 6, 1877 – November 4, 1931)

King Bolden was one of the originators of jazz, combining gospel and blues with ragtime; but he also brought the funk. He would adapt the music he heard around him to his cornet. The groundbreaking 'Big Four' marching band rhythm of his band was enormously popular in New Orleans during the first decade of the twentieth century. He lived the high life until he was hospitalized at the age of thirty at the Louisiana State Insane Asylum at Jackson after drinking himself into acute alcoholic psychosis. He spent the rest of his life there. Bolden was buried in an unmarked grave in Holt Cemetery in New Orleans. There are no known recordings of Bolden; but 'Funky Butt' is one of his most famous songs.
