strangers in the night

Ol' Blue Eyes had a major comeback with this classic ballad about love at first sight that struck a balance between "to be is to do" and "to do is to be" with his ad-libbed "do be do be do". Bert Kampfert composed the song for the score of the 1966 comedy 'A Man Could Get Killed' with the title 'Beddy Bye', which won a Golden Globe Award in 1967 for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. Charles Singleton and Eddie Snyder wrote the English lyrics that were made famous by Frank Sinatra. His version was at number one in the US and the UK and drove his album of the same name to the top of the album chart. It was Sinatra's last album with Nelson Riddle and his orchestra. The song won Grammys for Record Of The Year; Best Arrangement Accompanying A Vocalist Or Instrumentalist; Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male; and Best Engineered Recording - Non-Classical. Glen Campbell, who played guitar on the sessions, remembers "we did the whole song in two takes. We were all in the studio together, Frank and the band. They spliced together the best bits of both versions for the final record." Frank's ad-lib also inspired Iwao Takamoto to name Scooby-Doo.

Strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wondring in the night
What were the chances wed be sharing love
Before the night was through.

Something in your eyes was so inviting,
Something in you smile was so exciting,
Something in my heart,
Told me I must have you.

Strangers in the night, two lonely people
We were strangers in the night
Up to the moment
When we said our first hello.
Little did we know
Love was just a glance away,
A warm embracing dance away and -

Ever since that night weve been together.
Lovers at first sight, in love forever.
It turned out so right,
For strangers in the night
