The Fab Four pushed the boundries with this single that featured a boosted bass sound, backwards vocals, and some of the first music videos. It was the first taste of the experimentation going on in the studio during the sessions for 'Revolver'. The single was louder than previous Beatles recordings due to a new device called Automatic Transient Overload Control. Paul McCartney wrote 'Paperback Writer' in answer to a challenge to write something that wasn't a love song. The amplified bass sound came about as a response to the bass in a Wilson Picket song. They got it by using a loudspeaker as a microphone and putting it right in front of the bass amp. John and George sing 'Frère Jacques' for the background vocals. It was their second single to hit number one in every country it was released: Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and the US.

Paperback writer

Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job so I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer!

It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand
His son is working for the Daily Mail
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer!

Paperback writer

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few
I'll be writing more in a week or two
I can make it longer if you like the style
I can change it 'round and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer!

If you really like it you can have the rights
It could make a million for you overnight
If you must return it you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer
Paperback writer!

Lennon said that 'Rain' was "about people moaning about the weather all the time." They got the unique sound of the song by recording the backing track faster than normal and the vocals slowed down. The backwards vocals came about by accident according to John: "After we'd done the session on that particular song—it ended at about four or five in the morning—I went home with a tape to see what else you could do with it. And I was sort of very tired, you know, not knowing what I was doing, and I just happened to put it on my own tape recorder and it came out backwards. And I liked it better. So that's how it happened."

If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.
They might as well be dead.
If the rain comes, if the rain comes.
When the sun shines they slip into the shade
(When the sun shines down.)
And sip their lemonade.
(When the sun shines down.)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the world looks fine.
I can show you that when it starts to rain,
(When the Rain comes down.)
Everything's the same.
(When the Rain comes down.)
I can show you, I can show you.
Rain, I don't mind.
Shine, the world looks fine.
Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines,
(When it Rains and shines.)
It's just a state of mind?
(When it rains and shines.)
Can you hear me, can you hear me?
If the rain comes they run and hide their heads.
