psychotic reaction

This one hit wonder broke into the charts with this psychedelic garage rock classic about a break from reality. Originally called the Squires, they changed their name to The Count Five because they liked to wear Dracula capes onstage. They formed in San Jose where the band members attended various schools. Count One Kenn Ellner was at Los Altos Foothill College and was the band leader on vocals and harmonica (his father was their manager); Count Two John "Sean" Byrne was at San Jose City College and played rhythm guitar; Count Three John "Mouse" Michalski was at San Jose Pioneer High School and played lead guitar; Count Four Roy Chaney was also at San Jose City College and played bass; and Count Five Craig "Butch" Atkinson was at San Jose State College and played drums. Byrne came up with the title of the song while in Health Education learning about psychosis and the rest of the band worked the song into a bluesy mindbender that became the highlight of their live show. It got them an audition with Hal Winn and Joe Hooven of Double-Shot Records in Los Angeles. The single hit number five on the US pop chart and they were given the green light for an entire album named for the hit single. None of the follow-up singles matched the success of 'Psychotic Reaction' and the band broke up, reportedly turning down a million dollars in bookings to stay in school and avoid the draft.

I feel depressed, I feel so bad
'Cause you're the best girl that I ever had
I can't get your love, I can't get a fraction
Uh-oh, little girl, psychotic reaction
(shouted) And it feels like this!

I feel so lonely night and day
I can't get your love, I must stay away
I need you girl, by my side
Uh-oh, little girl, would you like to take a ride, now
I can't get your love, I can't get satisfaction
Uh-oh, little girl, psychotic reaction
