monday, monday

The Mamas and the Papas had their only number one hit with a song they didn't understand and didn't want released; sometimes it just works out that way. 'Monday, Monday' was the last single from their debut album 'If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears'. John Phillips wrote the song in one night after Denny Doherty was pressuring him for new material. The band topped the US pop and album charts during this week in 1966 and 'Monday, Monday' won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal the next year.

“I remember sitting down to write a tune about a universal theme that everybody would understand called `Monday, Monday.’ Then I had to beg to get it on the album. No one really wanted it on the album. No one was overly impressed. Then it became number one. I still don’t know what it’s about. It was really an exercise in songwriting, changing chords, having fun with it. A lot of people come up to me and say, `Was Monday a girl – or what?’”

Monday, Monday
So good to me.
Monday, Monday
It was all I hoped it would be.

Oh Monday morning
Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening
You would still be here with me.

Monday, Monday
Can't trust that day.
Monday, Monday
Sometimes it just turns out that way.

On Monday morning
You gave me no warning
Of what was to be.
On Monday, Monday
How could you leave
And not take me?

Every other day
Every other day
Every other day
Of the week is fine, yeah.

But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying
All of the time.

Monday, Monday
So good to me.
Monday, Monday
It was all I hoped it would be.
Oh Monday morning,
Monday morning couldn't guarantee
That Monday evening
You would still be here with me.

Every other day
Every other day
Every other day
Of the week is fine, yeah.

But whenever Monday comes
But whenever Monday comes
You can find me crying
All of the time.

Monday, Monday,
Can't trust that day.
Monday, Monday,
Just turns out that way.

Oh, Monday, Monday,
Don't go away.
Oh, Monday, Monday
It's here to stay
Monday, Monday
Oh, don't go away
