(6 February 1945 – 11 May 1981)
Natural mystic, soul rebel, duppy conqueror, and musical prophet that brought Reggae and Rastafari to a mainstream audience. He formed the seminal group the Wailers with Trenchtown compatriots Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh. Together they pioneered the styles of ska, rocksteady, and reggae. They also recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry whose innovative production techniques led to the formation of dub. When the group got stranded in London in 1971 after an ill-fated tour with Johnny Nash, Marley paid a visit to the offices of Island Records and convinced Chris Blackwell to give them a contract, which gave them access to state-of-the-art recording facilities. Marley eventually split with his bandmates; but kept the Wailers name and continued to tour extensively, slowly building a following with dynamic live shows. In 1976, on the eve of a show in Kingston to promote peace in the slums, gunmen broke into his house and shot him. He played the show, wounded, and then left the country for some time. He returned to play the One Love Peace Concert in front of the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. The band was invited to play at the Independence Ceremony for newly formed Zimbabwe. He developed cancer from a football injury on his toe and it spread throughout his body. He received treatment in Germany for months; but left for Jamaica when it didn't work. On the way, his condition worsened and he was brought to a hospital in Miami where he died. He was awarded the Medal of Peace by the United Nations, the Jamaican Order of Merit, and a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob Marley has become a hero to the people of the third world, an archtypal symbol of the struggle to rise above the challenges of poverty and repression. The political and spiritual themes in his music continue to resonate all over the world.
