love is all around

the first episode of mary tyler moore show aired on this date in 1970. at the time i was much too young to appreciate the social impact of a single (certainly not divorced from dick van dyke!) woman in her thirties making her own way in the big city. who would've thought that the sympathetic portrayal of a career woman would be such a lightning rod. seven seasons and twenty nine emmy's later, the show is considered to have set the standard by which situation comedies are measured. maybe i have such an appreciation for the feminine mystique because i grew up watching mary and rhoda turn the world on with their smiles.

the theme song, 'love is all around' by former cricket sonny curtis (who also wrote 'i fought the law'), always has me singing along and looking for a hat.

who can turn the world on with her smile?
who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
well it's you girl, and you should know it
with each glance and every little movement you show it

love is all around, no need to waste it
you can have a town, why don't you take it
you're gonna make it after all
you're gonna make it after all

how will you make it on your own?
this world is awfully big, girl this time you're all alone
but it's time you started living
it's time you let someone else do some giving
love is all around, no need to waste it
you can have a town, why don't you take it
you're gonna make it after all
you're gonna make it after all
