crimes of passion

Pat Benetar got down to it and took charge of love and pain with wild wounded wuthering will.   Her debut album 'In the Heat of the Night' sold over a million copies on the strength of the top thirty single "Heartbreaker".   'Crimes of Passion' was recorded with producer Keith Olsen at Sound City Studios in  Los Angeles.  Pat Benatar handled lead and backing vocals;  with Neil Giraldo on lead and rhythm guitars, keyboards, and backing vocals;  Scott St. Clair Sheets on rhythm guitars;   Roger Capps on bass and backing vocals;   and   Myron Grombacher on drums.     The album went to number twenty-seven in Sweden; sixteen in Australia; and number two in Canada, France, and the US.     won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

"Hell Is for Children"

Benetar:  "Hell Is for Children" came from an article in the New York Times, an exposé on child abuse. We came from really good childhoods. Our parents were still married; we had loving families. We were reading this thing and we were like, "What?" This is in 1980. We were so naïve and shocked. It was a terrible awakening. Who would hurt a baby? It was so unbelievable to us that it started this whole catalyst to write that song.
Giraldo:  When it came out, it was during that time when people were burning [our] albums, because they thought we meant hell is for children. Whoa, you don't get it!
Benetar: The entire universe of adults that had been abused as children were taking it straight to their hearts as their anthem. And yet we had all these nut cases out there thinking we're saying hell is for children, literally.

They cry in the dark
So you can't see their tears
They hide in the light
So you can't see their fears
Forgive and forget
All the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child

Because hell, hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh

It's all so confusing this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes and then apologize
"Be daddy's good girl, and don't tell mommy a thing"
"Be a good little boy, and you'll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell from the swing"

Because hell, hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh

Hell, hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell is for children
Hell is for children

"Hit Me with Your Best Shot"  went to number thirty three in Australia, ten in Canada, and number nine in the US where it became ubiquitous at sports events and as the intro music for MTV trailers.

"I'm Gonna Follow You"

"You Better Run" was a cover of the top twenty hit by The Young Rascals.   Her version charted in five countries; but only one of them broke in the top forty.  MTV followed up "Video Killed the Radio Star" with this song on their first day of programming on August 1, 1981.
