Johann Sebastian Bach

(March, 21 1685 – July 28, 1750)

This well tempered pearl of  of the Baroque period has come to be regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time.  Born in Eisenach, Germany the eight child of Johann Ambrosius Bach, court trumpeter for the Duke of Eisenach and director of the musicians of the town of Eisenach in Thuringia.  He grew up learning violin and music theory from his older siblings and uncles who were church organists, court chamber musicians, and composers.  His mother Maria Elisabeth Lämmerhirt died in 1694 and his father passed only eight months later.  At the age of ten, Johann Sebastian went to live with his brother Johann Christoph Bach, organist at St. Michael's Church in Ohrdruf.  Four years later he was awarded a scholarship to study music at St. Michael's School in Lüneburg, where he spent two years exposing himself to nobility and broader musical ideas.  Over the years he worked in increasingly more prestigious positions as  court musician in the chapel of Duke Johann Ernst III in Weimar;  organist at St. Boniface's Church in Arnstadt; organist at St. Blasius's Church in Mühlhausen (where he married his second cousin Barbara Bach);  organist and director of music for the duke's court in Weimar; director of music for Leopold, Prince of Anhalt-Köthen;  and, finally, cantor of the Thomasschule at the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig.

His death in 1850 came after his declining health led him to have an eye operation.  After his death he was regarded as a great organist and teacher; but it wasn't until his music was celebrated by the likes of  Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann, and Felix Mendelssohn.  His compositions include many organ works; works for harpsichord; keyboard works;  orchestral and chamber music;  cantatas;  motets; passions, oratorios, and a mass.
