Paul Weller found his way out of the wilderness by going back to the music of his youth for the golden rain this soulful revival. The critical success of his eponymous solo debut led him to further pursue the music that had inspired him. Weller says: “When I finished recording my first solo album I still had quite a few songs left over, they were just flowing out of me. I remember going into Black Barn studios and recording demos of ten or twelve tracks. Straight away I knew I was onto something...I’d started really getting into Traffic. The second album, particularly. Also John Martyn. For the first time it felt like I didn’t have this weight of expectation on me to write song in a certain style, which was always there with The Jam and The Style Council...It’s a special album for me. From being an anachronism, suddenly it felt like everyone was coming around to my way of thinking. Not that I can take any credit for it -there was just something in the air."

High tide - mid afternoon
People fly by in the traffics boom
Knowing - where you're blowing
Getting to where you should be going.
Don't let them get you down
Making you feel guilty about
Golden rain bring you riches
All the good things - you deserve now.
Climbing forever trying
Find your way out - of the wild wild wood
Now there's no justice
There's only yourself - that you can trust in
And I said - high tide mid afternoon
People fly by in the traffics boom
Knowing - just where you're blowing
Getting to where you should be going.
Day by day your world fades away
Waiting to feel - all the dreams that say
Golden rain will bring you riches
All the good things - you deserve now - and I say
Climbing forever trying
Find your way out - of the wild wild wood
