Johann Pachelbel
(September 1, 1653 – March 9, 1706)
This German Baroque composer was one of the great organ masters of his generation. His father recognized his musical talent at a young age and his academic achievements led to his admission to the Universitat Altdorf at the age of fifteen. He developed an affinity for Italian and church music and worked as court organist for Prince Johann Georg of Sachsen-Eisenach and then organist of the Predigerkirche in Erfurt. It was there that he was involved with the family of Johann Sebastian Bach, living at their home and becoming the godfather to his sister Johanna Juditha and teacher to his brother Johann Christoph, who would later teach Johann Sebastian.
Pachelbel refused several offers before he became the organist at the Württemberg court at Stuttgart and then town organist in Gotha. He accepted his final position as organist at the St. Sebalduskirche in Nürnberg, where he spent the rest of his life. He composed over five hundred pieces of music, including two hundred for the organ and more than one hundred fugues.
Canon and Gigue in D major for three Violins and Basso Continuo. Pachelbel's Canon is one of the most recognized pieces of music in human history.
